It is vital that you have an accurate measurement of your waist size prior to ordering. For most of our clientèle, this measurement is no doubt embarrassing. However, don’t count on “sucking it in” or that with the flexibility of our standard cotton belt straps (leather available for $12 per strap) it’ll still fit. To order a garment too small is to set yourself up for disaster (trust me, I’ve been there and done that myself and it only made me feel more like a whale).

When we say a kilt is a “size 42″ or “size 50″, that means when worn, the kilt is 42 or 50 inches around at the waist. Now, if you gain or lose an inch or two, it will probably still fit, but always order the size you are currently. Otherwise, you may be able to get it on, but it won’t look right. It’s generally best to err on the side of too big instead.

Please measure yourself with a tape measure (at the navel or where you normally wear your bottoms) prior to ordering. Particularly for larger men, your pants size is not the same as your kilt size; fashion mass producers use vanity sizing.

For length, you will want to have a friend measure you from your waist (or lower or higher as preferable), to mid knee cap for a regulation kilt length, though you can adjust the length one or two inches to your preference. Most men will need something between 20-25 inches in length. My husband, Adam, is 6′2 almost 6′3 and his minimum length is 24″ and his maximum 27″ (and that is actually a tad too long on him in my opinion.)

Also note that if your waist size is clearly larger than your hip size (as in a beer gut) we don’t require the hip measurement. If possible, we flair two inches out to the hip for that traditional look. Otherwise, please give the hip measurement as well. For further tailoring, optionally you may also measure the distance from your true waist to your true hips. In general, I estimate the hip as about six inches down, or 1/4 of the length.

Note for the Ladies:

We can’t prevent you from cross-dressing and we’re not going to ask you who is going to be wearing the kilt when you order, but please do not order our regular kilts for yourself. A King Kilt is designed for a male body and won’t fit a female form properly. We do offer a Hostess Kilt, which is designed for wear by women.
