Each King Kilt is carefully hand sewn by our kiltmaker. We hem from the top, never the bottom for a more authentic look and feel. Our standard kilts are four-yard kilts below 48″ and five yards above 48″. Ladies Kilts, and Prince Kilts, and Eight yard kilts are considered nonstandard models. Prices on 8-yard kilts are per project, please request a quote.

Washing Instructions

For most kilts, we recommend hand washing and lying flat to dry, but if you prefer, you can toss non-tartan kilts in the washer, dark fabrics on cold, light fabrics on warm, no bleach. Solid cotton kilts do okay in the dryer (they’re usually wrinkle-ease fabrics), but may need ironed. If the pleats loose their crispness or become wrinkled, press with a steam iron.

Wool kilts are dry clean only and dry cleaning is also recommended for our cotton tartan kilts as the fabric may shrink.

Standard Features

By default, we use cotton belt straps with metal bar buckles for closure (leather straps available, see below) with three cotton-belt loops which can be sewed on the outside of the pleats, pants style or inside like traditional kilt-belt straps; please specify your preference if any when you order.

Where possible, the pleating is regimental (by the stripe) with a reverse pleat on the right side and all pleats blind stitched in to the hip. A third buckle/strap set can be added to the hip upon request. We baste at the top, so if you want your pleats stitched down, please let us know.

Our plaid kilts are made from light weight cotton and cotton blend fabrics, making them most ideal for summer wear and unsuitable for winter or formal use. Solid-colored cotton and tartan kilts, however, are made from quality bottom weight material and good for use year round in most climates. Most tartans are either spring weight (8oz) or medium weight (11oz) please specify your preferences on your order.

We now have two pleating styles available, half-pleats and full-pleats. Full-pleats is the style we always offered, but now is considered non-standard. Half-pleating uses eight inch pleats instead of four inch pleats, which results in a deep-pleated kilt (the pleats tend to sit better when deep) and typically has between 12-15 pleats versus 24-30 pleats, as on a full-pleated kilt. This gives a four-yard kilt a feel similar to an eight-yard kilt without the $400 price tag. The pleats are wider, so it does make for a more casual appearance, however. If you prefer full pleats, we willl be happy to oblige, but it will add $15 per kilt for the extra labor.

Note Adam’s kilt as pictured is a 54″ waist made with only four yards, so his half pleats are closer to the depth of the full pleats rather than deep pleated. For full depth pleats at waist sizes higher than 48″, please order five yards.

Nonstandard Features

At your request, we would be happy to leave out or change any of our standard features, within reason (i.e. we can’t–won’t–leave out the pleats on a King Kilt).

For the costs of additions, see below. If what you’re looking for isn’t listed, contact us and we’ll see what we can do for you. Pockets, sporrans, etc, are cut from the same material as the kilt. If you have any other suggestions, let us know, and we’ll see what we can do, but please don’t ask us to copycat other kiltmakers.
